Caring for life: the book that is finally here

Wow! Thank you to those of you who have stuck with me for TEN years now. This blog is 10 years old and the BOOK that I have been working on for all that time is finally for real. The final stages of the book included spending August of 2022 recieving NO meetings zoom or otherwise in order to finalise the big picture changes and rewrite an entirely new chapter from composites of decomposed chapters. It included paying for my own copyeditor to check for sense once I lost sense of what I was doing in September 2022. It included submitting in October 2022. It included filling out a long form with marketing stuff like:

The transformational possibilities of everyday hygiene and care practices

Examining the remarkable evolution in Asia-Pacific hygiene practices, Caring for Life is a call to action, a theory of change, and a fascinating account of the transformational possibilities of care practices. It shows how experiments in these practices can lead to collective, widespread change, ultimately providing a practical and hopeful vision for environmental action.

It included finalising images and permissions at the end of 2022. It included reviewing copy edits in July 2023. It included reviewing proofs in November 2023. It included approving the cover design. It included choosing people for the press to ask to endorse the book. And finally, now in February 2024 it includes HOLDING THE ACTUAL BOOK IN MY HANDS.

Thanks to all of you who have stuck with me — read my posts on turning your Phd into a book, writing book proposals, what happens after the proposal, things I learned turning a thesis into a book, on (not) holding it together while rewriting, and the final process of trying to get it all finished with constant interruptions while working from home.

If you are interested in seeing the final product — you can order form https://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/caring-for-life.

What’s next? Well now I’m off to the Association of American Geographers conference to promote the book!
